A petition containing 1200 signatures was presented to the full Council meeting on Tuesday 13 June by Councillor Geoff Acton on behalf of the St Margarets’ Traders requesting introduction of thirty minutes free parking for shoppers on Crown Road.
The parking problems and restrictions in the area are well known and both traders and shoppers alike would like to see thirty minute free parking introduced as soon as possible. It would enable people to quickly call in for what they need and avoid having to find somewhere to buy a thirty pence voucher and is similar to other schemes in the borough.
Simon Chapman, chairman of the local Traders Association said; “We have been campaigning for this for a while as it will help local traders and improve customer service significantly by allowing short term stopping and preventing illegal parking in bus stops and on yellow lines. We hope the Council take a positive view and go ahead with the scheme as it will certainly help business in the difficult trading conditions we are now experiencing.”
The petition will now be passed to David Trigg, the Cabinet Member for Transport for due consideration and discussion at the next appropriate Cabinet meeting.

Where else in this or other boroughs does such a scheme operate?
Chris Squire on 2006-06-23 20:26:25 +0000There is nothing new about free parking schemes in this borough or any other, the nearest 'free for 30 minutes' scheme in operation is the one at the council offices car park at York Street Twickenham.
simon chapman on 2006-06-25 00:31:29 +0000Noted; what I meant was: are there any such schemes operating on public roads as against car parks? I think not. This is probably a significant point of difference. If you could find and point to such a scheme, it would strengthen your case considerably.

Why don't ALL the traders sell vouchers? They are quite hard to find.
Rog on 2006-06-30 09:03:35 +0000I think most traders do stock vouchers, but the system is very inefficient. Find a space, park, buy a voucher, go back to the car then back to the shops. I can remember buying a voucher once in the last ten years. Either meters or pay machines should have been installed as per the far end of Heath Road, Twickenham.
I am not convinced the free thirty minutes is the best solution, but I hope it is given a trial.
